Beyond the Ballot’: forms of citizen engagement between democratic elections – Symposium March 15th 2012.

Deliberative and participatory democracy specialist group,

Political Studies Association of Ireland

Call for Papers

The idea that ‘people matter’ is recognised by international organisations, and increasingly at the national level. In contemporary democratic systems, deliberative and participatory democratic processes as well as civic engagement is manifest in many and varied ways beyond the electoral system.

Given the symposium’s theme of forms of citizen participation and engagement ‘beyond the ballot box’, and taking a broad perspective on deliberative and participatory democracy, we welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines and methodological approaches. Research on national and international developments in deliberative theory and practice, mass movements, new social movements, user fora and/or stakeholder engagement in policy processes are welcome.  We also welcome submissions from those doing applied social research, or those working in a policy context with socially excluded or marginalised groups. Finally, we are particularly open to receiving papers from doctoral students or early stage researchers.

We would be grateful if you could forward a 300 word abstract to us at clodagh.harris@ucc.ieor at gemma.carney@nuigalway.ieby Wednesday December 21st 2011.
