Biography: 

Gemma Carney, PhD (TCD) has worked as a post doctoral researcher at the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, NUI Galway since July 2008. Previously she was Policy Analyst at the Irish Senior Citizens Parliament, and lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Trinity College Dublin. At the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, she is working on a number of team-based multi-disciplinary research projects related to ageing, intergenerational solidarity and civic engagement. Gemma is currently working with Tom Scharf, Virpi Timonen and Catherine Conlon (TCD) on the Changing Generations project.

Dr. Carney was awarded a Research Development Initiative grant from the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences in  2008. That research used participatory methods to investigate how third sector lobbies influence social policy development in Ireland.Gemma is lead author of the report entitled ‘Community Engagement in Ireland’s Developmental Welfare State: a study of the life cycle approach,’ which was launched by Minister Joan Burton in May 2011. Dr Carney has published in Ageing and Society and has presented her work at British Society for Social Gerontology, Political Studies Association, International Association for Geriatrics and Gerontology, and the American Political Science Association. Gemma has various leadership roles in the university through the Gender ARC, an advanced research consortium of NUI Galway and University of Limerick. She is also currently co-convenor (with Clodagh Harris, UCC) of the specialist group on participatory democracy of the Political Studies Association of Ireland.

Inter-generational solidarity and justice. Politics of ageing: the impact of policy design on senior political action. Social policy making for the life course: how civil society organisations perceive and argue for better policy planning for older people, children and people with disabilities. Participatory and action research. Diverse forms of civic engagement across the life course.
