Launch of Report on Social Exclusion and Ageing in Diverse Rural Communities

The cross-border research report, Social Exclusion and Ageing in Diverse Rural Communities, was launched by Minister Kathleen Lynch TD (Minister of State for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People in Ireland) and Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA (Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in Northern Ireland) on Monday the 20th of February 2012. The launch, included a presentation of findings and a panel discussion.

New Report on Dementia in Ireland launched by Minister for Health

A report that will lay the foundation for Ireland’s first National Strategy for Dementia was launched by the Minister for Health, James Reilly, in Trinity College Dublin today (January 18, 2012).  The report estimates prevalence rates of dementia in Ireland; quantifies the economic and social costs of dementia; assesses current service availability for people with dementia and best practice in dementia care nationally and internationally. It was launched on the occasion of the opening of the conference ‘Developing a National Dementia Strategy’.

ICSG and TCD launch a national report on Dementia

The Irish Centre for Social Gerontology and Trinity College Dublin has the pleasure of launching a national report entitled 'CREATING EXCELLENCE IN DEMENTIA CARE: A Research Review for Ireland’s National Dementia Strategy' by Suzanne Cahill, Eamon O’Shea & Maria Pierce.

The report will be launched at a national conference entitled 'Developing a National Dementia Strategy' to be held in Trinity College Dublin on Wednesday 18th January 2012.

ICSG welcomes visiting fellow, Professor Vanessa Burholt, from Swansea University

The Irish Centre for Social Gerontology welcomes Professor Vanessa Burholt, Swansea University, as a visiting fellow to its Rural Ageing Observatory. Professor Burholt, a distinguished social gerontologist with a background in sociology and psychology, will be at ICSG from November 2011 until February 2012. Professor Burholt has published widely on such topics as rural ageing; attachment to place in later life; housing and migration of older people (including ethnic minority elders); intergenerational relationships; and support and social relationships of ageing adults.

ICSG accepted as a member of the IAGG’s Global Ageing Research Network (GARN)

The Irish Centre for Social Gerontology is delighted to have been accepted as a member of the IAGG’s Global Ageing Research Network (GARN). The International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics is creating a network of more than 500 international centres of excellence on ageing to foster the scientific development of gerontology and geriatrics around the world.  GARN will develop international research capacity in ageing research and provide a valuable means of exchanging information.

ICSG speakers at CARDI Conference

The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI) hosted a major international conference - Ageing Globally, Ageing Locally - in Croke Park, Dublin on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2011. The conference, which was opened by President Mary McAleese, explored a number of issues including how different countries address the challenges and opportunities of population ageing, why global ageing matters to Ireland and how policy makers, business and service providers can best plan for changing demographics.

NUI Galway and COPE Galway Celebrate Successful Partnership

NUI Galway and COPE Galway have been collaborating successfully for a number of years across a wide and varied range of projects. The partnership was formally ratified in December 2009 where a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Professor James J. Browne, President of NUI Galway, and John Concannon, Chairman of COPE Galway. Since then, the staff, students and service users across both organisations have been immersed in projects which have been hugely beneficial to the both partners and ultimately the community of Galway.

Judge McGuinness to Chair NUI Galway/UL Equality Through The Ages Event
